Is the Cybertruck legal in Switzerland?
Yes. Tesla does not sell the Cybertruck in Europe, but it becomes fully legal in Switzerland after conversion and individual homologation with the cantonal road traffic office. Here is exactly how it works.
Why Tesla does not sell it in Europe
The Cybertruck has no European type approval. Tesla never certified it for the European market, mainly because of different requirements on lighting, body edges and pedestrian protection. As a result, you cannot buy it from Tesla in Switzerland or the EU, and you cannot register it as-is.
That does not make it illegal. Swiss law provides an individual homologation procedure precisely for imported vehicles without type approval.
The individual homologation procedure
- Import and customs clearance. The vehicle enters Switzerland with VAT (8.1%) and the automobile duty (4%).
- Workshop conversion. Lighting and signalling brought to European standards (lights, indicators, reflectors), plus the equipment and settings required by the Swiss technical requirements ordinance (VTS/OETV).
- Cantonal inspection. The road traffic office examines the vehicle in detail and validates its compliance.
- Registration. The canton issues the vehicle licence and plates.
Every canton applies the same legal basis, each with its own lead times. We work with partner offices in Geneva, Vaud, Valais and Fribourg, and in other cantons on request.
What this means for you
A homologated Cybertruck behaves administratively like any Swiss car: normal insurance, periodic inspection, clean paperwork at resale. And it can be driven all over Europe.
